Compare transport options

Transport is a major and growing source of CO₂, the principal greenhouse gas responsible for climate change.

This calculator allows you to input journey details and compare your CO₂ footprint (the amount of CO₂ for which you are responsible) for undertaking the journey by different modes: plane, train, bus, car, cycling or walking. By promoting awareness of the relative emissions from different transport modes we hope to encourage people to choose lower CO₂ modes.

The calculator is based on international aviation data and on national averages for buses and train ‘CO₂ emissions per passenger km’. For car journeys, additional questions allow you to tailor the results according to the car you drive and the number of people in the car.
